Birth Doula
Women who use a doula are generally more satisfied with their childbirth experience. They feel prepared for labor, have better communication with their health care providers, are informed about what is happening with their bodies and their baby’s body, and they take an active role on the decisions that are made concerning their pregnancy and childbirth. They view their childbirths as something they accomplished rather than something that happened to them.
A doula is a professional labor assistant trained in providing effective pain relief an/or comfort to women in childbirth, whether the woman chooses a natural or un-medicated childbirth, uses epidural anesthesia, or is having a planned cesarean.
Going Au Natural
If you are planning a natural or un-medicated childbirth, your doula can be crucial in minimizing the intensity of the surging rushes (contractions) and will give suggestions that make labor more tolerable. She meets with you prenatally for childbirth education specific to natural childbirth, practices techniques with you that give comfort during labor, guides you through overcoming possible emotional barriers called “birth tigers”, and provides information that could contribute to an easier and shorter labor such as how nutrition affects labor and optimal fetal positioning.
I Want My Epidural!
If you decide to use epidural anesthesia for pain relief, your doula will help you to divert potential side effects by showing you how to keep your baby’s heart rate happy, and how to have your baby turn during the decent for easier pushing. She will show you how to stay in control and connected to your childbirth experience with you remaining an active participant rather than just lying in bed waiting for birth to happen.
But I’m Having a Cesarean
Your doula may assist you with post operative recuperation and help initiate breastfeeding, or she may take care of older siblings while you are in delivery. In addition, she may also come to your home in the weeks that follow to assist with older siblings, provide light housekeeping and yummy meals, and give instruction on basic cesarean healing, newborn care, and how to soothe a colicky baby.
